Sandy Hook Elementary Title I/Reading Resource October 18, 2010 3:10 pm
Overview of Instructional Program: Students in the program are given reading instruction either one-on-one or in a small group setting. This reading instruction is given in addition to classroom reading instruction.
Budget overview: The budget is used for: 1. salaries (some partial, some entirely) of reading resource 2. 5% of the budget is used to fund parent involvement (magazines, newsletters) 3. School Improvement tutoring- over 20% of the budget is used in this area
Staff Development Activities: Master classes offered by the county are being funded with Title 1 money. State Reading Conference is usually funded, but not able to fund this year. November 8th Reading Recovery Conference will be held. Reading Recovery teachers attend a meeting once a month. A specialist in Reading Recovery is housed for the county at ALE. Resource teachers planned and presented at the Share Fair. Information was then shared will all staff who were not able to attend the session at the Share Fair.
Parental Involvement Activities: 1. Newsletters sent home 3 times a year. 2. Every month Reading Connections for grade 3-5, and a magazine for grades K-2 are sent home. 3. Parent meeting/pizza dinner was held on September 23 to explain the Title 1 program. 4. Three times a year, a progress report is sent home. This report shares the student's progress with the parent. These reports are sent 2nd, 4th, and 6th six weeks.
Other: Another Title 1 meeting is being planned. Possible theme will be for students to attend with parents to earn supplies for their homework supply box.
Parents sign a note when their child enters the program. They also fill out a survey at the end of the year. This helps the staff evaluate the program and how information is shared.
Next meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 12th at 3:10.

Title 1 Team Meeting
January 11, 2011
3:10 PM
1. Program Status Report-title teachers now serving Kindergarten (around 15 students). Reports were given by each title teacher addressing their case load. When newstudents enroll at Sandy Hook, let them know if you are concerned about major weakness.
2. Program Planning-Title 1 will have a program for parents and title 1 students on February 1st. Students will receive a pizza box with homework supplies inside. Parents will receive information of strategies to best help their students with reading at home. May have another program in the spring-might be held at the Strasburg Library.
3. Budget Development- We were grandfathered in as a title 1 school for the school year 2010-2011. Not looking likely that we will be a title 1 school next year. This means county will be paying salaries of title teachers. We will also have a loss of funding if we are not a title 1 school. Hard to predict about title 1 schools, since it is based on a sliding average for the county.
4. Other: Information about Reading Recovery-a one-on-one program used in first grade for at risk students. Students are able to come out of program at 12 weeks, but most go 16 weeks. To successfully discontinue at 12 weeks, students need to be reading at the end of the year reading level or above (level I or J).
Data given at meeting: Reading Recovery students who successfully discontinued had 80% passing rate on the SOL. When the first round of reading recovery students finish, we will be asked to give feedback for possible round 2 students.
